Based on ufological reports and contemporary speculation, insectoid aliens — especially figures associated with the praying mantis, or Mantis — are described as one of the oldest races. They are usually portrayed as a hierarchical and psionically advanced civilization: intelligent, strategic, and often cold or calculating. Their technology is said to be sophisticated, including spacecraft, camouflage, and, in some sources, the ability to shapeshift. There are also mentions of mind control devices and mechanisms that would allow them to appear in human form. Communication is said to be primarily telepathic. Among themselves, some species might use clicks or other sounds; others are described as lacking spoken language. Reports of contact with the Mantis emphasize a high level of telepathy that goes beyond the simple transmission of thoughts: it allows sharing, in a single instant, complex images, concepts, and multisensory impressions. Witnesses frequently speak of entire scenarios or symbolic visions, closer to a direct “download” than a regular conversation. One of the most recurring hypotheses presents them as ancestral observers. According to this theory, they are on Earth and live underground, a civilization that has been observing humanity for millennia. Their goals are said to be linked less to open contact than to studying the human species as an experiment. Similar traits appear in archaeological records and mythologies. In Tamara, Iran, researchers identified a petroglyph of a humanoid figure with praying mantis characteristics, dated between 4,000 and 40,000 years old. In Africa, the San people (also called Khoisan) include figures with praying mantis heads in their rock art, often treated as creator gods. Insectoid beings also span Native American folklore and other African traditions. Among the Khoisan, the praying mantis is considered the first living creature on Earth. According to their legends, this primordial figure granted life to animals and humans, invented a language so that ancient peoples could communicate, brought fire to humanity, and created the Moon by throwing a gallbladder into the night sky to guide hunters.
