Atlantis

Atlantis (in Ancient Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος – trans.: “island of Atlas”) is a fictional island mentioned in the works Timaeus and Critias of the Greek philosopher Plato as part of an allegory on the hubris of nations. In the story, Atlantis is described as a naval empire that ruled over all western parts of the so-called known world,[1] making it the literary counter-image of the Achaemenid Empire.[2] After an ill-fated attempt to conquer "Ancient Athens", Atlantis falls out of favor with the deities and submerges into the Atlantic Ocean. As Plato describes Athens as similar to his ideal state in the work The Republic, the story of Atlantis is intended to bear witness to the superiority of his concept of the state.[3][4]
